Use of sound in David Lynch films

Sound is an extremely important part of film arguably just as an a important element as video. Throughout cinema filmmakers have used sound to convey emotion and add tension to a scene, here I will be looking at David Lynch’s unique use of sound in his films.

Their are many different ways to manipulate sound to change the mood of a scene or of a film. A film maker who is known for doing this is David Lynch, he is noted for his use of sound for his very precise choice in sound but also how he edits it.

The use of sound used in David’s films add dimension to his films that could not be achieved just the use of video. All of his films from eraserhead to Mulholland drive have a similar mood and atmosphere to them, David Lynch does this by turning up and exaggerating his background noise.

Though the this use of sound also adds to the story and the dream like theme David is trying to convoy in his films. The sound plays in to the film like a abstract and indirect story point, that involves the audience and is a large reason that David Lynch films are so unique and mysteries.

Take this example, here you can see the way he combined different background noises, individual sounds and music, to create an anonymous score that can not be related to any place or feeling and that links to all the themes of his films.

This is something I would like to play with In my short film to add a bit of atmosphere and mystery. Though I may not take it as far as David Lynch to make my film seem to “dream like” it is something I think could add dimension to my film.

James Cameron

Last week we gathered research on director James Cameron and put it in a spider diagram

The information consisted of Information on his carrer and work aswell as his personal attributes towards his work such as hard working and driven, multi talented in various areas of film making and also making up for effort and hard work what he lacks in talent.
I found similarities in this in terms of making up for a lack of talent in hard work and determination.

Proposal

Rationale:

Looking back over the past year whilst on my course i have further developed skills i had previously had a basic understanding of such as video editing and photo editing, for video editing i have used premier pro, in using this i have developed a good understanding and knowledge on various editing techniques such transition being able to switch from one shot to another using such techniques as fading, dissolves and cutting. I have done little parts of sound editing and recording, in a previous project I recorded a voice over piece with i placed over music bit, both of which i had produced myself in garageband, i then edited the sound of the music bit when placing the voice recording over it in order for the listener to hear it clearly also i edited the vocals of the voice recording in terms of the pitch and manipulating the voice in order to fit in with the genre in which the project was based. I will cover more of this and further advance my skills, knowledge and understanding of sound editing in my next project as it as a major factor of it. This project will further help develop my sound editing skills such as cutting various interviews together and making them flow as if it were one whole interview, I will use audition and garageband for this. I will use audition also to manipulate and edit the levels of the music that will be included in the podcast in order for the interviews to be heard clearly. Also I will use premier pro to cut and edit archive footage for my video to go along side my podcast for when I submit it to YouTube.

Part 2:

For my unit 8 project I will be producing a podcast consisting of a profile piece interview on a DJ and also including a 5 minute pre recored set also by the same DJ playing over the interview throughout.

My project will focus on mainly unsigned underground DJs within the genre of house music and they’re early begins in to the world if Ding and what inspires them. It will based on various different podcast and interviews produced by different labels such as defected records, boiler room, mixmag and guest list tv as there are all within the same genre of music that I am basing my podcast around and the way they are shot and presented are similar to how I will present mine. My project will explore the first steps a DJ goes through in terms of earliest memories of house music, first inspiration, as well as an insight into there likes and dislikes of the genre and the profession of DJing.

I have undertaken research into various different media outlets that produce similar types of interview videos and podcast in order to gain knowledge and understanding of what type of questions to ask, how to record and produce the podcast and also how to market it in terms of opening intros and style of questions.

The aim of the project will be to produce the best podcast possible using all the information I have gathered.

I will produce a video aswell using archive footage I have gathered up and images I have edited myself to go along with the podcast I will have recorded before hand and post the link to the final video on my wordpress blog.

Evaluation Methods.

I will be evaluating my project using reflective journal step by step throughout my project in order to keep track of my progress and in order to make sure i meet goals and targets set for myself and to correct mistakes i have made all in order to produce a high quality final submission. Also I will evaluate my overall performance on the project once I have finished editing and handed in my final piece of work.
